Darling Dreams

I can dance on the water's edge
and never get wet
hold the cup
and never drink
stand next to the door
with the keys in my hand
and never let myself in
claim that I am a saint and
never experience salvation
and like this
I have borne all my children and never loved them
a mother possessing a womb
but lacking a heart
dispondent in my dealings with my darlings
as they sit in my nest
beaks upward
necks strained
for me to feed them
I will not have food for them
if I cannot learn to feed myself
This poem is about loving yourself and taking care of yourself.
Jesus says that we must love our neighbor as we love ourselves, meaning in order to love and care for others, we must love ourselves.
