Fear Alight

Fear is a like a fire
Flames burning bright
All is burned until
Nothing's left in sight
Fear is like a thief
That scurries in the dark
Binding up the strong man
Leaving only its painful mark
Fear is like a tidal wave
Roaring towards the shore
Drowning out all life
Until there is nothing more
Fear is like a flood
Waters rising high
Overtaking solid ground
Only waves passing by
Fear is like a hurricane
Winds beating without mercy
After all is said and done
Only destruction is left to see
Fear is like a tornado
Spinning round and round
Until only chaos
Is left to be found
So as I'm in my fleshly boat
And of worry I've had my fill
Let me call on Him
Who cries out "Peace be still."

Elaine... what one comes attracted to on the internet, or in real life, is a curious thing... I searched "fear is like a tornado" as I am working on a 2-D art piece right now, around spiritual, political, cultural and psychological aspects of fear (it's my professional topic of interest as an educator-artist-scholar)-- so I really enjoyed your poem here, and just to let you know, as I have done research on what children (and adults) think "fear looks like" and "what would your life look like without fear"-- it is interesting to see how many people draw a tornado on paper for "what fear looks like" -- and as you say above in the poem, what fear to excess ends up spinning in our lives individually and collectively-- that is, "only chaos" eventually will come-- by which, I would add, more fear and more chaos (violence and destruction)-- and how curious fear can be both natural (e.g., fear of tornadoes is understandable) and how it can be cultural (e.g., fear constructed for purposes of controlling others)-- well, you get where I'm coming from I'd guess... if you want to learn more about my work you can go to http://csiie.org and link to my name under "Instructors"... thanks for this poem piece and I'll likely cite it and give credits to you when I can... thanks for your good works... and may love, courage and fearlessness enspirit and makes big 'waves' in this world... -M.
